Careers
Careers Guidance makes a major contribution in preparing young people for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life, in order to help them make a successful transition to adulthood. St Peter’s Collegiate Academy CEIAG provision includes the following elements:
- A stable careers programme
- Learning from career and labour market information
- Addressing the needs of each pupil
- Linking curriculum learning to careers
- Encounters with employers and employees
- Experience of workplaces
- Encounters with further and higher education
- Personal careers guidance from a qualified adviser.
Careers Curriculum Intent
The Careers Education Programme at St Peter’s Collegiate Academy seeks to positively support all of our students to acquire the educational, social and employability skills necessary for lifelong success in a diverse and changing world of work. We will seek to motivate and inspire students to consider all opportunities open to them within and outside St Peter’s Collegiate Academy.
The Academy intends to provide outstanding careers education, information, advice and guidance in order to ensure that each student has high aspirations and is fully prepared for their next steps in learning, training or employment beyond their time at St Peter’s Collegiate Academy. This is in line with the ethos of the Academy in terms of the 5 key to learning:
Be Respectful;
Be Responsible;
Be Supportive;
Be Reflective;
Be an Active Learner.
The school will deliver a comprehensive programme for the needs and abilities of all students in order to raise expectations and aspirations, maintain the uptake of Further and Higher Education opportunities, highlight the effects of changing industrial and economic structures upon today’s society and provide up to date labour market information. This will be through a coordinated programme of curriculum based learning during PSHE, assemblies, enrichment activities and events.
Careers Curriculum Implementation
From Year 7 and through to Year 13, students will participate in our Careers Education Programme, that is primarily delivered within their PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) lessons and supported by information and activities in their subject areas and also by enrichment events. Staff are encouraged to highlight and raise the profile of careers within their subject area. Whole year groups events are further additions and often delivered through live web events or by outside providers. Throughout their time at St Peter’s Collegiate Academy students receive talks about different career pathways including employment, apprenticeships and university. Students will also have the opportunity to visit universities and different types of workplaces. All students in Year 10 and Year 12 are required to complete a one-week work experience in the summer term.
Students will have 1-1 sessions with a careers adviser at key points during their St Peters journey. At this time, they can talk about their ideas for the future, explore the range of options after they have finished their GCSE’s and Level 3 courses and plan the steps to achieve their aspirations. Students can expect advice and guidance that is personalised, comprehensive and impartial. We aim to enable our students to raise their aspirations and make informed choices about their future learning and career pathways.
Careers Curriculum Impact
St Peters Collegiate Academy progress towards achieving the Gatsby Benchmarks is evaluated using the online Compass+ tool. This is carried out on a termly basis by the Careers Leader supported by our Enterprise Co-Ordinator from the Black Country LEP. The St Peters Collegiate Academy CEIAG development plan is based upon the outcomes of the Compass audit.
Provision is also monitored through regular feedback from students, staff, governors and our partners. This feedback is collected through questionnaires and evaluations following key careers activities and at the end of each academic year. This is analysed by the Careers Leader with actions fed back to staff via meetings and briefings.
The effectiveness of our careers guidance will be reflected in the higher numbers of students progressing to positive destinations such as apprenticeships, technical routes, sixth form colleges, further education colleges, universities or employment. Destination Data is used to assess how successfully students make the transition into the next stage of education or training, or into employment and to inform future CEIAG provision. The CEIAG policy is reviewed on an annual basis by the Careers Leader, in September, and the Careers Programme is reviewed on an annual basis, in July. These are ratified by Governors.
