The Impact of National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) in Our School

National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) provide invaluable training and support for teachers and school staff at all levels. Whether focusing on developing expertise in high-quality teaching practices, such as behaviour management, or managing multiple schools across trusts, NPQs play a crucial role in professional development within our school setting.

Enhancing Teaching Practice

One of the primary benefits of NPQs is their emphasis on improving teaching practice. Teachers participating in NPQ programmes gain insights into effective teaching strategies and classroom management techniques, translating into improved classroom environments, where our students benefit from structured and supportive teaching methods.

Improving Culture and Wellbeing

In our school, we offer the Church of England NPQ Flex programme for the NPQLT (National Professional Qualification in Leading Teaching) and the NPQLBC (National Professional Qualification in Leading Behaviour & Culture), providing our staff with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills within our own school.

Recently, several teaching and associate staff have undertaken the NPQLBC, a course suitable for all teachers and leaders involved in developing and implementing behaviour and wellbeing strategies. Over the course of a year, participants cover topics such as creating a culture of high expectations, enabling conditions for good behaviour, addressing complex behavioural needs, developing effective professional development linked to behaviour and culture, and implementing evidence-based improvement plans. The course lasts one year and includes a mix of group and one-to-one sessions, supporting staff in developing their understanding of all aspects of behaviour and culture within a school environment. The aim is for staff to implement this knowledge and associated skills effectively in our own school.

Timely and Relevant Professional Development

The flexibility of the NPQ Flex programme allows our staff to engage in professional development that is both timely and relevant. This means that our teachers and leaders are continually updating their skills and knowledge to reflect the latest educational research and practices. Consequently, our school can swiftly adapt to new educational trends and policies, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of educational excellence.

Feedback from Staff

Feedback from our staff has been overwhelmingly positive.  One staff member who completed the programme this year said that it had enabled them to adopt a more evidence-based approach in which they could identify best practices and areas for improvement in their teaching. Additionally, they valued networking with colleagues who share similar interests and responsibilities, which fostered a greater sense of community within our school environment.

Conclusion

National Professional Qualifications have a profound and multifaceted impact on our school. By providing comprehensive training and support, NPQs help our teachers, leaders and associate staff develop the skills necessary to enhance teaching practice, foster leadership, and ultimately improve student outcomes. The NPQ programmes not only contribute to the professional growth of our staff but also ensure that our students benefit from a high-quality education delivered by skilled and knowledgeable educators.
